On 9 August, South Africa celebrates National Women’s Day. It is a day that honours the women of our country, their strength, their contribution and their central place in every family, workplace and community.

Women’s Day commemorates the 1956 march to the Union Buildings, when twenty thousand women of every background stood together in unity and courage. Seventy years on, that spirit of standing together continues to inspire. It reminds us of what is possible when people are united behind a common purpose.
Across the municipalities of South Africa, women serve in every role imaginable. They manage offices and depots, keep our financial systems running, care for public spaces, lead teams, drive service delivery and hold communities together. Many do this while also carrying the responsibilities of home and family. To the women among our membership: your contribution is seen, valued and celebrated, not only today, but every day.
Women’s Day is also a moment to reflect on the importance of long-term security. For generations, many women carried the work of caring for others without the protection of a pension or the safety of savings. Today, every woman who is a member of this Fund holds something powerful: a retirement benefit in her own name, growing steadily, protecting her future and the future of those who depend on her. This, fellow members, is progress worth celebrating.
We encourage all our members, women and men alike, to use this day to appreciate the women in your lives. Honour the mothers, daughters, sisters, colleagues and friends whose daily efforts so often go unrecognised. A word of thanks costs nothing and means everything.
At the MWRF, our duty remains constant: to protect what you have worked for, so that every member can look ahead with confidence. Your security in retirement is our purpose and we carry that responsibility with care.
