A Freedom Day Message from the Municipal Workers Retirement Fund
Every South African alive today has grown up in, or lived through, the remarkable journey of a country choosing to build itself anew. This Freedom Day, as the nation marks thirty years of constitutional democracy, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on what that means.
The 2026 Freedom Day theme, “Freedom and the Rule of Law: Thirty Years of Democratic Citizenship,” invites us to consider something that is easy to overlook when it is working well. The Constitution. The document signed thirty years ago was not merely a legal instrument. It was a commitment. A commitment that every person in this country, regardless of background, class, language, belief, or circumstance, is entitled to dignity, to rights, and to equal protection under the law.
That commitment has shaped the institutions, the workplaces and the communities that South Africans are part of today.
For the Municipal Workers Retirement Fund, Freedom Day carries a straightforward but meaningful message. A constitution that protects people’s rights is the same foundation on which a retirement fund must operate. With transparency. With accountability. With a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of the people it serves.
Our members work in municipalities across South Africa, in communities that represent the full diversity of this country. They come from different provinces, different backgrounds, and different walks of life. What unites them is their dedication to public service, and the knowledge that they are being looked after by an institution that takes that responsibility seriously.
This Freedom Day, as national celebrations take place in Mangaung, at the heart of the Free State, South Africans across the country will mark thirty years of democratic citizenship. It is a milestone worth honouring, not with grand gestures, but with a renewed appreciation for the rights and freedoms that belong to every person in this country.
To our members, and to all South Africans: freedom is not only a historical event. It is something lived, shared, and renewed every day.
