A Workers’ Day Message from the Municipal Workers Retirement Fund
Every early morning. Every long shift. Every task done with care and quiet commitment. Every working South African who shows up, day after day, and gives their best. Workers’ Day is a moment to pause and say, simply and sincerely: thank you from the us.
Work is one of the most fundamental parts of a life well lived. It provides purpose, structure and the means to care for the people we love. Across South Africa, millions of men and women go to work each day in hospitals and schools, in fields and factories, in offices and on the open road. They do so in different conditions, for different wages, toward different goals. But they share something important. A commitment to showing up. A willingness to contribute. A belief that their effort matters.
It does.
For the Municipal Workers Retirement Fund, Workers’ Day holds particular meaning. Our members are the people who keep South Africa’s municipalities running. They work in towns and cities across the country, in roles that are often demanding and rarely celebrated. They do so because they have chosen a life of public service, and that choice deserves to be honoured.
Workers’ Day, this 1 May 2026 , is not only about our members. It is about every working South African. Every parent who works so their children can have more. Every young person building a career from nothing – the silent pioneers. Every person who has given decades of service and is now approaching retirement. Every worker who simply gets up and does what needs to be done.
The Municipal Workers Retirement Fund exists to ensure that when working life comes to an end, what follows is secure, stable and dignified. That is our promise to our members. And it is the spirit in which we celebrate this day.
